15mic 17mic 18mic BOPP Plastic Roll Laser Holographic Film with Primer Coating
BOPP film primer coating (also called base coating/primer) is a core pre-process in the production of cigarette packaging transfer films and metallized films. Its main function is to improve the adhesion of subsequent coatings (release layer/metallized layer/adhesive layer) to the BOPP substrate, while optimizing film surface flatness and barrier properties, preventing subsequent aluminum peeling and transfer layer detachment. It is most widely used in the production of BOPP transfer films for cigarette packaging. The following is a practical method for BOPP primer coating specifically for cigarette packaging applications, including process steps, parameters, material selection, equipment, and solutions to common problems, suitable for industrial-grade coating production and ready for direct use.
Core Premise: Core Requirements for BOPP Primer Coating in Cigarette Packaging
Cigarette packaging films have extremely high requirements for environmental protection, adhesion, and flatness. The primer must meet the requirements of no solvent residue, low odor, adhesion ≥3B, compatibility with subsequent release layers/metallized layers, and the coated film surface must be free of pinholes and shrinkage cavities, and compatible with subsequent vacuum metallization and molded laser processes for cigarette packaging transfer films.
Commonly Used BOPP Substrates: Cigarette packaging transfer films mostly use 18μ and 20μ BOPP clear films (corona-treated surface coating), with a few thinner versions using 16μ.

Core Process: Base film pretreatment → Graphic/metal layer processing → Composite transfer → Peeling and recycling → Post-processing
Base film and release layer: PET (high temperature resistance, precise positioning) or BOPP (low cost) is selected as the base film, and a release layer (silicone oil type) is coated to facilitate subsequent peeling;
Holographic molding: Holographic/laser microstructures are molded on the release layer at high temperature and pressure (130–150℃) to form anti-counterfeiting textures;
Vacuum aluminum plating: An ultra-thin aluminum layer (approximately 40–60nm) is vacuum-deposited on the molded surface to enhance the metallic feel and reflectivity. Local aluminum plating can also be used to create a镂空 (hollowed-out) effect;
Coating adhesive layer: A transfer adhesive (mainly water-based environmentally friendly adhesive) is coated on the aluminum-plated surface to ensure strong adhesion to the base paper;
Composite and transfer: The transfer film is laminated and pressed onto the cigarette pack base paper (mainly 200–230g white cardboard);
Peeling off the base film: After curing, the PET/BOPP base film is peeled off (recyclable), and the aluminum layer and holographic pattern are permanently transferred to the cardboard surface;
Post-processing: The transferred cardboard undergoes offset printing, hot stamping, die-cutting, and creasing to produce the finished cigarette label.
